Happy Anniversary!
Tokimeki.memorial turns one!

Post 00041 | July 4th 2023

I just renewed my plan with the hosting provider. That should keep the website running for another year. An anniversary is a good occasion to look back at the year that has passed as well look towards the future.

When I started the website, I had two goals in mind. One, I wanted a void to shout into. Up until that point, this void was offered by Twitter, but with its takeover by Elon Musk looming on the horizon, it became obvious that finding somewhere else to post my ramblings would be a sensible thing to do. A little website seemed like the perfect fit. I didn't have to worry about changes in management or policy. There would only be me and hosting provider and if the latter started acting up, it would be simple to just move the website.

The second goal is a bit more personal. When we were emptying my grandparents house after they died, we stumbled upon a worn book. Turns out my grandmother had been keeping meticulous records of visits and whatnot in the form of a diary. I always found the idea very sweet, but I don't really live a life worthy of paper. That said, I definitely had this in mind when I built the site and decided to go for a blog style design.

The two goals are very different, but they do have one thing in common; It's not something you would usually share with other people. I keep writing with the assumption that I have no audience. That said, looking at the statistics my hosting provider shares, the website has had 22000 hits during its first year. I'm sure most of them are caused by a couple of overly eager RRS clients and people accidentally adding a dot between Tokimeki and Memorial when wanting to google the game. Still, this is more than ten times my wildest expectations and I can't help feeling a humbled by it.

Thank you if anyone reads this. If you wouldn't mind, I would love it if you would leave a comment in the guest book. If nothing else, it would disprove my hypothesis that nobody reads the blog.

So, what's in store for the site in the future? Short term, I am working on an archive section. When I designed the site, I wanted it to be low spec; Something that would be accessible on almost anything with a web browser. While the code is simple, the front page has a summary of every single post I have posted so far. At the moment this is more than 15 MB of space, which is more than the current front page of the New York Times. This is a lot for an older browser to handle, so instead I want to make an archive where posts will end up after a while. Posts will either by sorted into categories or be listed chronologically. It is taking some time to implement, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I'll keep you updated once it's live.

Thank you for sticking with me through this first year. Here's to hoping for a smooth second year. :)

Website updates

Post 00019 | Oct 4th, 2022

I'm surprised I've managed to update this site for as long as I have. I honestly imagined I would have lost interest after a couple of weeks but I guess I find some enjoyment in writing. I don't know if anybody actually reads this and I think that is for the best as there's a good chance even the slightest popularity would taint my enjoyment.

(That said, please take a moment to write in my guest book)

Anyway, I have made a couple of under-the-hood updates to the site. The front page was starting to get a bit… overwhelming with all posts being on full display at once. It would take almost thirty pages to print! I want this page to be browsable on old computers so such a big page wont do. Instead I have separated posts onto subpages with five posts each with links to switch between them - You've seen blogs before, you know the drill. The front page still holds a couple of paragraphs of each post for now. Eventually there will be a table of contents page where posts are grouped by categories and such.

Oh, and I'm afraid I'll have to update links in the rss feed at some point. I'm sorry if that is going to confuse you rss reader. It'll only be a one time thing.

Here's to a glorious Q2!

Guestbook is Live!

Post 00009 | July 29th, 2022

I finally got the guestbook up and running. Turns out they are a lot more high-tech than I first imaged, so I figured it would be better to use something ready-made. I found this free offering from yellabook.de that also offers some basic spam protection.

It is definitely a lot fancier than the rest of this website. It has style-sheets and even tens of lines of JavaScript (which I still have Strong Opinions about) (。•́︿•̀。)
It doesn't look too nefarious though, so I will cope.

In any case, go check it out! tokimeki.memorial is officially interactive! Web 1.5 or thereabout!

Hiya!

Welcome to my blog!
Sorry if it looks a bit... vintage; It's been about two decades since I attended an HTML evening class and seeing I have Strong Opinions on JavaScript, I'm afraid its going to look a bit last century.
On the plus side, I can almost guarantee you that the site is tracker-free because I don't know how to program stuff like that (and nor would I want to).

... and good to see you again if you came from the bird site!
I was @danielfrugt on there, but I left as the ambiance wasn't was it used to be - and let's face it - it won't get better under new ownership. It's best to abandon ship while there are still life boats.

... or if this is our first encounter, nice to meet you!
My name is Daniel, I'm from Denmark - Dan, Dane. I like old stuff, computers and video games in particular. I imagine this blog will mostly contain screenshots and small reviews of retro games or whatever old stuff I find on eBay.
There's a good chance I will be complaining about capitalism as well. I hope this doesn't scare you away.

This is very much a work in progress. This will either be A) a passion project which I will be maintaining autistically, or B) I will abandon it within a few weeks or whenever my hosting plan is up for renewal.
Curious to find out which it will be? Please subscribe:

(I almost felt like a YouTuber there)

Also, I plan on making a guest book when I figure out how (did I mention I'm a bit rusty?).
